Good Sam Professionals win representation with IAM Healthcare!

October 11, 2023

Dear fellow Good Sam Professionals,

We are so excited to announce that you – we, all of us working together – prevailed today in our vote to unionize Professionals at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital! By a wide margin of 116 Yes to 25 No, with 1 challenged ballot, we chose IAM Healthcare as our union.

With this landslide victory, we are making a clear statement that we are ready to do what it takes to make Good Sam the very best it can be for our patients and our professions. As highly educated, highly skilled Professionals, we have always been leaders in the hospital; now we have a voice to take that leadership to the next level.

We also understand that not all of you were supportive of unionizing. We acknowledge that you may have questions or concerns that were not resolved before the vote, and we are committed to working with you to address them in the days ahead.

In taking this step to unionize, we all overcame tremendous pressure, misinformation, and even legal violations of our rights by MultiCare’s corporate executives. Even tonight, as the Board Agent for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) prepared to count ballots, MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital COO Jim Bradley and one of MultiCare’s Labor Relations staff tried to stop the process, insisting that your ballots should be impounded and left uncounted.

In the days ahead, you may hear from MultiCare executives again about their legal challenges to your election. IAM Healthcare attorneys are confident in our legal position and will defend the rights of Professional employees so we can start the bargaining process as soon as possible.

Even with these challenges, we always took the high road, staying focused on our professional needs and the needs of the diverse patient populations who depend on the care we provide. We will be in touch more in the days ahead to discuss next steps.

PS – While we have a way to reach most Professionals, we still don’t have accurate emails for every person in the bargaining unit. Please help us get the word out by forwarding this email to your colleagues and asking them to fill out this bargaining survey and nomination form (if they haven’t already done so). This is the best way to make sure we have their contact info for future communications.

Why a Union for Professionals?

Professional employees at Good Samaritan Hospital work behind the scenes every day to make sure patients get the care they need, but we don’t have a seat at the table in decisions affecting the care we provide. That’s why we started a committee of United Professionals and contacted IAM Healthcare for assistance in gaining a voice at work. As highly skilled and educated Professional employees, we have unique interests, which can only be addressed by gaining recognition for our own union and negotiating a contract based on our needs.
